14th Breast Cancer Wedding Granted on Oct 3 in NYC

In conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, our partner charity, Wish Upon A Wedding, granted a special wedding for a New York woman battling breast cancer.  The wedding for Damaris and Sean was granted on Friday, October 3 at Top of the Garden Event Space in Midtown Manhattan by the charity’s New York Chapter.

How beautiful is this view!!!

This wedding marks the 14th breast cancer related wedding wish that Wish Upon A Wedding has granted and the 5th one this year.

About the Couple:

Damaris and Sean grew up in the same neighborhood.  But it wasn’t until 2010 that the two began dating after connecting online.  As their relationship blossomed into love, the two moved in together.  Sean became a surrogate father to Damaris’s disabled daughter and the couple celebrated the birth of their daughter in 2012.  “We never thought from all we’ve been through, and how different our paths in life were, that we would be happy and in love through it all,” says Damaris.

But in the midst of all their joy, Damaris was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013.  Undergoing four surgeries since the diagnosis, the couple has had to put their wedding plans on hold.  But after finding about Wish Upon A Wedding online, the couple applied for a wedding wish.  In their application, Damaris wrote “Getting married feels like a dream that won’t come true.”  But thanks to generous donations from Wish Upon a Wedding’s partners in the New York area, their big day was held on October 3 at the Top of the Garden Event Space.

About the Charity’s Breast Cancer Wishes:

This wedding marks just one of many weddings that Wish Upon A Wedding has granted over the years for women diagnosed with breast cancer.  Launched in 2010, Wish Upon A Wedding was created to celebrate the love between two individuals, who are engaged or want to celebrate their marriage in an intimate setting with their close family and friends.  This oftentimes means celebrating their love despite a terminal diagnosis or hardship.  Since the charity was founded in 2010, Wish Upon A Wedding has granted more than 70 weddings and vow renewals for couples across the US.  14 of them have been breast cancer related, including the one on Oct 3 in NYC.

Now that the charity provides wishes for couples anywhere in the country as well as urgent wishes, Wish Upon A Wedding will continue to grow and so will the number of wishes that they grant for women diagnosed with breast cancer.  According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.  For these women diagnosed with breast cancer and who want to marry the ones they love, like Damaris in New York, Wish Upon A Wedding will be honored to grant their wedding wishes, like it has been since 2010.

Hundreds say ‘yes’ to the dress in Sisters

Bargain wedding dresses sold for a good cause

POSTED: 6:25 PM PDT October 11, 2014 UPDATED: 8:57 PM PDT October 11, 2014
SISTERS, Ore. – Would you say yes to the dress? Well, hundreds of women had a chance to do so Saturday in Sisters at the FivePine Lodge — and to help a good cause at the same time.

These women were not only getting their dress for the biggest day of their lives at a low price, but also helping a good cause.

But they had to do early.

“I woke up at 5:30 surprisingly, and I was here by 6,” Mariah McGinley said.

“I got here first,” Liesl Palmer said with a laugh.

“I decided I wasn’t going to get here right at 5, but I woke up at 4:30,” Crystal Franklin said.

The founder of Brides for A Cause, Erin Scharf, said it “seemed like people were really on a mission to find a wedding dress today.”

Many of the women were willing to travel quite a distdance to pick out the right dress for their big day.

“I had intended on even going to Portland to get the dress, and then I heard on the radio that this event was here ,so it just worked out,” Franklin said.

This event, co-sponsored by radio station WILD 107.7, wasn’t just any bridal gown sale. You could say yes to a dress for only $150. Also, half of the benefits go to Wish Upon a Wedding, an organization that provides free weddings for couples with terminal illnesses.

“So the money that we collect here goes to them, so people can come here, get a great deal on a wedding dress and support their cause,” Scharf said.

One bride-to-be really hit the jackpot, as she won a raffle — and got her dress for free.

“Well, I signed up online, wrote my name down, they called my name and I was like, ‘No, no way!’ And they were like, ‘Yeah!’ — and I was like, ‘Wow!’ McGinley said. “I cried and teared up a little bit, like — oh, wow.”

With so many options to choose from, sometimes narrowing it down can be harder than picking the one you like.

“One dress that we were going to like take all apart and redo because it was so fantastic, and we went to buy it, and on the way to buying it we found another dress and I tried it on, and I was like, ‘This is the dress I’m supposed to buy,'” Palmer said.

You can also keep your options open.

“I may end up getting both dresses and decide later,” Franklin said with a laugh.

Either way, everyone can go home feeling good.

“I’m just super glad I could support brides for a cause, and that my money went to a good cause. and that I found something I love for so cheap, it’s perfect,” Palmer said.

If you weren’t lucky enough to make it this morning, Brides For a Cause has its boutique open seven days a week in Portland.
